The Medissimo company wanted to find out about the medication habits and routines of French chronic patients aged 60 and over, 15% of whom take more than 5 medications a day.
Our aim is to raise awareness of the impact of compliance on treatment efficacy , by exposing pitfalls and misconceptions, especially when they present risks to individual and collective health. Our aim is also to highlight the levers and support points for better compliance: dialogue and tools.
National sample of 630 people representative of the French population aged 60 and over living at home and able to read and write, taking at least 1 prescription medicine for at least 6 months and more than 5 different medicines a day, i.e. 15% of the population aged 60 and over.
Sample compiled using the quota method on the basis of gender, socio-professional category, urban area and region of residence. Quotas established on the basis of an omnibus survey of a representative national sample of French people aged 18 and over, to determine the penetration of this target and its main socio-demographic characteristics. This phase took place from May 25 to 26, 2023.
This study does not take into account the behavior of patients living in medical-social establishments (around 730,000 people) or in situations of illiteracy (around 6 million people).
Medissimo's study is the first to be carried out on a very large, nationally representative sample of multi-medicated chronic patients living at home and in digital capacity.
In a concrete and detailed way, it highlights the extent of the discrepancies between declared compliance (100%) and actual compliance (32%). Rich in figures, it points out all those little arrangements or deviations when it comes to forgetting to take a dose, being late or modifying a dose.
It also measures the weight of certain preconceived ideas about the seriousness of these sprains, which are often underestimated or ignored.
Revealing the intimacy of patients' relationship with their medicines, the study opens the way to a demand for pharmacist support through dialogue, monitoring and even preparation of treatments. The network of pharmacists in France, with their proximity to patients and the trust that comes from their expertise, is an opportunity to support compliance and resolve this public health issue.

The platform brings together the pharmacist, who delivers the treatment with full traceability, and the patient or his or her homecare assistant, who fills in the dosages from the MEDIPAC® pillbox prepared by a healthcare professional, and the nurse, who monitors the treatment in liaison with the pharmacist and the family, and informs the doctor in the event of a medication risk.
